“For patients, caregivers and families, acupuncture and Chinese medicine has much to offer to those affected by cancer. After seeing loved ones struggle with diagnoses, chronic health conditions, and the effects of allopathic (conventional) biomedicine, I recognized that gaps in the care under the modern medical system can be addressed by Chinese Medicine’s unique ability to engage the public in supportive and effective forms of complementary care. Seeing patients and caregivers get the support they need is why I am continually inspired to practice this medicine.”

For patients, caregivers and families, acupuncture, Rian believes Traditional East Asian Medicine medicine has much to offer to those affected by cancer. After seeing loved ones struggle with diagnoses, chronic health conditions, and the effects of allopathic (conventional) biomedicine, he recognized that gaps in care throughout the medical system can be addressed by Chinese medicine’s proven ability to provide effective forms of complementary care. For example many experience pain and nausea as a substantial and debilitating side effect of chemotherapy; fortunately Traditional East Asian Medicine is very effective at reducing, and in many cases eliminating, these adverse symptoms. Seeing patients and caregivers get the support they need is why he is continually inspired to practice this medicine.
Rian is a registered Acupuncturist, (R.Ac) and practitioner of Chinese Medicine in good standing with the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncturists of Ontario (CTCMPAO). He studied Philosophy and Health Studies at both Concordia University and the University of Toronto. During his tenure at University, he took a particular interest in Eastern forms of healing and West African indigenous spirituality where he ultimately choose to focus and blend his passions. He worked for a number of years as a teacher, caregiver and educator for children and youth in low income neighbourhoods.
It was Rian’s experiences learning from some great healers and teachers which allowed him to take an integrative approach to wellness combining diagnostic principles and therapies rooted in Traditional East Asian Medicine with those of Ancestral reconnection, divination and spiritual healing rooted in the Ifá tradition. He is passionate about offering healthcare using a natural and a non-invasive approach to wellness. Central to his practice is the importance he places on patient education and self-care as a means to taking ownership over one’s health outcomes.
Passionate in supporting others to reclaim their physical and spiritual wellness
Living in South America and South East Asia has taught Rian that healing in essence comes in many forms. Having had the opportunity to learn, observe, and participate in many ancient healing practices, he understood that the cornerstone of healing starts with spiritual wellness. Having seen first hand the healing effects of Spirit possession, healing candles, spiritual baths, and initiation ceremonies and rituals, he has witnessed the positive ramifications of well-meaning practitioners going beyond treating the physical body to effect outcome to not only their physical health, but their life situations as well. He has felt the impact of working with and honouring ones own Ancestors and how that can have a healing effect on the physical health and psychology of a person. When our Spirits are healthy our mind and our body will surely follow.; when we are able to tap into our felt sense of divinity we can reclaim and empower our life through purification, purpose and passion.
Rian, in conjunction with his Elders Olúwakẹ́mi and Ọlátúnjí Ṣómọ̀rín, is the author of the forth coming book, entitled: Ifá Through The Eyes of Awo: West African Indigenous Spirituality. In addition to being a practitioner of Traditional East Asian Medicine, Rian is also a priest, healer and diviner (Awo) within the Ifá Tradition of West Africa.
In private practice, Rian uses mainly Japanese forms of acupuncture and moxibustion therapies which are comparatively gentler and less invasive than other forms of acupuncture, patients usually experiencing little to no pain during sessions. Rian places importance on the use of Qigong and breathing techniques as a way to strengthen our immune systems and increase our physical and energetic vitality.
Rian has completed the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre’s Fundamentals of Oncology Acupuncture professional training course for acupuncturists. He is passionate about helping people with cancer and their loved ones get the support they need.
